The new YouTube-based news channel from Ontario Pork will use TV-style reporting to share features and human-interest stories highlighting people along the food supply chain.
Ontario Pork (OP) said in a release the stories featured on OP News “will be similar to the reporting you might see on television news programs.”
Why it matters: The news channel aims to connect consumers with where their food comes from and how it is produced.
“Across Ontario there are thousands of people who each day put in an incredible amount of hard work to feed Ontario and the world,” said Ontario Pork chair John de Bruyn.
“We want to share these stories and celebrate these people. Ontario Pork News will be that conduit for us to tell the positive stories happening across the industry.”
Steff Lebrocq, Guelph’s Market Fresh meat manager, said in the release OP News is an excellent avenue to showcase the plethora of agricultural professions and their career potential while highlighting the industry’s positive contributions.
“There are so many misconceptions about agriculture floating around, and there really isn’t a countering voice,” said Lebrocq.
OP News coverage will encompass farmers to butchers, nutritionists to processors, truckers to veterinarians and chefs to restaurant owners, providing insight into each person’s integral role in providing food to Ontario and the world.
The channel currently features nine videos highlighting supply chain heroes, a former vegan turned butcher, Roesch Meats and More, a farm-to-fork feature and the loss of young farmer Dalles Bergsma, which sparked the development of an agriculture-based mental health retreat and workshop facility.
“We are incredibly grateful to Ontario Pork for taking so much interest and providing support for our Three Oaks Cabin project”, said Al and Diane Bergsma, Lambton County Pork Producers. “Being able to share our story, although difficult, does provide some cathartic relief.”
The Bergsma’s hope is OP News exposure would help cultivate recognition for mental wellbeing and promote awareness of the respite cabin and mental health resources.
In addition, the channel will feature handy “how to” videos for preparing pork in partnership with Breakfast Television and spotlight how ensuring healthy animals and safe food, fostering a sustainable environment, and building strong communities and people are agricultural cornerstones.
Ontario Pork will post new videos every two weeks on https://www.youtube.com/@ontarioporknews and share them across Ontario Pork’s social media channels to engage with a wide demographic of viewers.
